Blessed are the poor in spirit, For for theirs is kingdom of heaven.

In Matthew 5:3, Jesus told his disciples "Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. What a profound declaration by Jesus that when a person is poor in spirit, his is the kingdom of heaven. By mere reading the verse (same with other verses in the Beatitudes), we will find obvious contradictions between our normative way of seeing things against what Jesus declared as "blessed". How can be one being "poor" be considered "blessed"? Deeper study and reflection on the verse revealed that as we acknowledged or realized our need for a savior, the more we crave and long for His presence and the more dependent we become on Him. In this sense, we become poor. As we mature in faith, our perspective should change to a deeper dependency on Jesus, a change from our own self-reliance to reliance from above.

Income Tax Return - Integrity Check

One's integrity is measured by his Income Tax Return (ITR). Its not the amount that matters, but the truthfulness of the amount declared. This April 15, 2010, income earners are required to file their ITR for year 2009. For employed individuals, whose income is solely derived from their employment, it is expected that their ITR represents their exact and true income, since it is their employer who deducted the applicable income tax due every pay day. However, for self-employed and those with businesses, where administration and enforcement of our country's tax laws need improvement, greater discretion is given on the taxpayer. Should an owner of sari-sari store, car wash/auto detailing shops, hardwares store, etc. declare or even file their ITRs? How about the millionaires and multimillionaires?
